In early April of 2016, Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware announced the winner for the 2016 Delaware Youth of the Year. Michaella Moore, hailing from the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club took the top honor that night at The Queen, and has honorably represented her Club, community and kids from around the state ever since.
After graduating in June 2016 from the Tatnall School in Wilmington with Honors, Michaella accepted a full academic scholarship to Howard University. Currently finishing up with her junior year, Michaella has excelled with the opportunities and challenges of university life.
Her sophomore year Michaella participated in the University of Virginia’s Summer Medical Leadership Program. She also kept herself busy as President of the College of Arts & Sciences (COAS) Sophomore Council; Coordinator for the COAS freshman experience program; Volunteer Coordinator for Camp Kelsey; Community Service Chair for the Freshman Leadership Academy; Member of the 1867 Undergraduate Assistanceship Program; Member of the Ladies of the Quad Social Club; Volunteer Tutor for the Petey Greene program; and when she was home on breaks, she volunteers at her local Boys & Girls Club as a tutor, mentor and coach. We are exhausted just reading about Michaella’s accomplishments and commitments – but let us not forget her dedication to her studies. Michaella maintains a 3.8 GPA!
As if that was not enough, this year Michaella had the experience of a lifetime traveling to South Africa with Howard University’s Young African American Leadership Initiative (YAALI). Michaella spent 12 days exploring Cape Town and Johannesburg researching the history and culture of the country as well as participating in community service projects. Michaella was fortunate enough to celebrate her 21st birthday while in South Africa.
The latest update on Michaella brings cause for celebration! In March 2019, Michaella was elected President of the Howard University Student Association (HUSA)! Michaella no doubt proved to the Howard student body that she is every bit the leader in college as she was at the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club. We know she is going to be a great HUSA Executive President. Way to go Madam President!
Michaella will be the first to credit her Boys & Girls Club and the many positive experiences she had in her Club for helping her become the young woman she is today. As she so eloquently stated in her Youth of the Year speech back in 2016:
“The Club has been a part of my life since I was 6. I started at the Club more for the basketball, but as I have gotten older, I have found more than just a gym with basketballs in it. At the Club, I feel I belong. Through my favorite Club program, the Lady Sharks AAU basketball team, I learned that being a strong, smart African-American girl is awesome! I learned from my coaches and the other players that I should not hide my unique talents. We all bring different qualities to the team, and it’s those differences that make our team better. When I am not playing basketball at the Club, I am participating in the Keystone Club. I love the fact that through this program we can effect so much change in our community and the teens who live in it. I am reminded daily that giving back is our rent for living. Without the Club, my road to self-assurance would have been rocky. I could have searched for self-love through other people and jeopardized my morals and my future, but I didn’t. Without the Club, I would be embarking on my future still trying to figure out who I am in my present.”
