Five benefits of After-School Programs for Children and Parents

After-school programs are a vital resource for children and parents, providing enrichment in a structured and safe space. Here are five benefits to enrolling your child into an after-school program

  1. Providing a safe space to go after school

Having a safe space to go after school can be an enriching experience. With many children spending over 80 percent of their time outside of school, it is imperative for children and families to find a space for them to learn and grow. Children enrolled in an after-school program learn how to build their self-esteem in a learning environment that differs from their school environment. Children that are in a structured and safe space after 3pm are also less likely to witness or be a victim of a crime, allowing parents to feel more at ease.

  1. Socialization for youth in a safe and enriching space

Being in a structured and enriching environment can promote key values children need to be engaged with the world around them. Character education helps instill shared social values and attitudes in students. This educational method helps students become engaged citizens in their community. Boys & Girls Club programs such as the Keystone Clubs and Youth of the Year are aimed at building the next generation of engaged community leaders.

  1. Opportunity for growth after school

After-school programs also provide opportunities for personal and career growth. Children from low-income backgrounds that participate in at least four after-school programs increased their odds of graduating from a four-year institution from 10 percent to 50 percent. After-school programming exposes students to different activities they may not receive in school. In fact, finding new experiences is a top priority for parents enrolling their children into an after-school program. After-school programs prioritize finding a child’s passion and purpose, setting the stage for continued growth later in life.

  1. Improved physical and mental health

After-school programs can also improve the mind and the body. According to the 2022 Boys & Girls Club National Youth Outcomes report, children who participate in after-school programs are more likely to abstain from substance use than high schoolers nationally (83 percent vs. 64 percent). After-school programs also introduce children to healthy eating habits, improving their overall physical health. Additionally, children in these programs report improved mental health, including a reduction in anxiety.

  1. A place to find friendship and mentorship

Finding your tribe can be challenging. According to a 2021 study by the Wallace Foundation, parents expressed concern about their children missing out on the social connections and friendships after-school programs can provide. After-school programs like the Boys & Girls Club can provide a place for children to find their community. In fact, Club kids report feeling more comfortable reaching out to Club staff for help with personal issues. Club kids also feel welcomed at their respective programs, with 92% of Club kids stating the people at their Club accept them for who they are.
