The Brick Mill Boys & Girls Club has always been a place to explore new interests, connect with friends, and express one’s creativity. That statement rings even more true for Trey T. When Trey became a Club Kid four years ago, he hoped Brick Mill would be a place where he could find the best version of himself. Since then, he has grown into the most creative version of himself.

In this Q&A, Trey shares what he enjoys most about being a Club kid, the mentors who have made a difference in his life, and why he believes the Club is a place where everyone can be creative.

Q: When did you first join the Boys & Girls Club, and what was your first impression?

Trey: I’ve been here for four years. I joined in first grade with my older sister, who is now in sixth grade. When I first came to the Club, I saw all the different activity centers and thought, “I think I might like it here.” I realized this was a place where I could choose what I wanted to do and explore different interests.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do at the Club?

Trey: My favorite thing is going to different centers and playing games. There are several different centers, but I usually like the card game center the best.

Q: What makes the Club a fun and welcoming place to spend time?

Trey: The Club feels very inclusive, and there are so many things you can do to be creative. Sometimes we have Legos that you can use to build things, and there are other activities that let you make things and try something new.

Q: Do you have a favorite memory or experience from your time at the Club?

Trey: I don’t really have one specific favorite memory. I just enjoy being here because there are so many things to do. Between the different centers, games, and creative activities, there is always something to explore.

Q: Have you built relationships with any mentors or staff members at the Club?

Trey: I’ve really been able to bond with the staff members who are here most of the time, especially Mr. K, Mr. Ra and Mrs. Mona. I’ve gotten to know all three of them.

Q: How would you describe your relationship with those mentors?

Trey: It’s kind of like a friendship. I feel comfortable asking them questions, and I’ve been able to build a good relationship with them.

Q: What kinds of special activities or events do you look forward to at the Club?

Trey: Sometimes, we get to do cool crafts, and on Fridays, there are special activity centers. Toward the end of the school year, we also have what we call “Cup Weeks.” There are different activities and things to look forward to throughout the year.

Q: What other games or group activities do you enjoy playing with other Club members?

Trey: Sometimes we play games like Family Feud or do trivia. Those activities are really fun, too.

Q: If someone asked you why they should join the Boys & Girls Club, what would you tell them?

Trey: It’s a place where you can just be a creative person.

Q: What has being a Club kid meant to you?

Trey: I like that there are so many different things to do. You can play games, make things, participate in special activities and spend time with people. You also get to know the staff members and build relationships with them.

Q: What do you think makes the Boys & Girls Club special?

Trey: I think it’s the fact that you have so many options. You can choose what you want to do, be creative, and try different activities. There are always opportunities to have fun.
