Cara P. has been swimming at the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club since she was seven years old. Now at 17, she is a member of the U.S. Paralympics C Standard Team. “There were Clubs that wouldn’t allow me to even try out. Here, my sister and I could both swim” she says.
Cara’s swimming journey includes significant personal challenges. After being diagnosed with cancer at a young age, she experienced complications from an infection during treatment that left one leg paralyzed. Eventually, she made the decision to have the leg amputated. “Swimming was amazing to return to after that,” she says. “I had been dragging that leg around, it was like an extra 12 pounds.”
At the Greater Newark Club, her coaches worked with her to adapt her training and maintain a high level of performance. The Club provided a supportive environment where she could continue to grow as both an athlete and a young adult. “She has been through numerous challenges and has battled through every time – and always with her usual sense humor and sarcasm” says Coach Diana, Aquatics Director at the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club.
Cara’s passion for swimming took her to the 2025 World Para Swimming World Series & Championships in Indianapolis. Here, she was inspired by the variety of differently abled individuals and their dedication to the sport she loved. It was watching these races that sparked an idea for Cara’s dad when they returned home. “He gave me a time to beat but wouldn’t explain why.” Only later did Cara learn that she’d swam a qualifying time for the U.S. Paralympics C Standard Team.
The C Standard Team is comprised of athletes who meet a specific set of qualifications, with the goal of focusing on developing their skills and system for improvement. These 15 individuals are also encouraged to compete in specific swimming competitions and may be invited to the U.S. Paralympics Swimming Camp.
Today, Cara continues to be involved at the Greater Newark Club working as a swim instructor and lifeguard. She balances her time in the water with school, and her commitment to the Club remains strong. When asked about what makes the Club so special, Cara credits her instructors and staff. “They never viewed me as handicap. Coach Heidi, Coach Diana, Coach Kevin and Coach Tom have all been really great.”
The Boys & Girls Club provides a foundation of support, skills, and confidence that helps young people like Cara prepare for whatever challenges lie ahead.
