The Mike’s TEAM Program at H. Fletcher Brown Boys & Girls Club is a partnership with Wilmington Friends School in which Wilmington Friends sends high school-aged mentors to participate in group mentoring activities with Club kids. Mike’s TEAM has an academic focus; mentors help students with their homework for one hour and then participated in a structured academic activity for one hour. Each session of the program is approximately 7 weeks long and each 7-week session has a different theme. Previous sessions have focused on topics such as Black inventors, multicultural holidays, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).
The current session’s theme is government and civics. Club kids are learning about how our government is structured and how elections run. They are putting together their own speeches and running mock elections around the Club, as well as brainstorming ways to be more civically engaged in their own community. The goal of this session is to have Club kids better understand our government and the purpose of the upcoming midterm elections, as well as to give them a chance to practice their public speaking skills and think about ways they could help improve their community. Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester was kind enough to visit with our Club kids and their mentors to tell them more about her role in Delaware and in Congress and talk to them about the importance of being civically engaged and (once they are old enough) exercising their right to vote. She also shared her story with them and helped them begin thinking about what they would like to be when they grow up and some of the various college and career paths that can help them achieve their goals. We are very grateful that she took time out of her busy schedule to spend time with the staff, kids, and mentors at H. Fletcher Brown and on behalf of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware and the Mike’s TEAM Mentoring Program, we thank her very much for her time.
