With the Be Great Youth of the Year Gala being a trademark event for the Boys & Girls Club of Delaware, we thrive on preparing our members for greatness even before they can participate in this monumental event. On March 29th Western Sussex Boys & Girls Club hosted their Junior Youth of the Year. Mayor David Genshaw once again attended and presented each Jr. Youth of the Year with a tribute. Senator Bryant Richardson also presented to the candidates.
For months, the candidates, were diligent in completing their portfolios; from using their communication skills to reach out to staff for recommendation letters, organizing and preparing their papers and speeches, and collecting awards and certificates that they have earned over the years displaying their accomplishments. They were persistently competing to display to the judges what kind of role model they are. The night of the event we had a full house with board members, parents, Club members, and Board Members filling the audience. We are immensely proud of our candidates for their leadership and confidence as they delivered their speeches. They truly worked hard and took their nomination seriously.
Through the Jr. Youth of the Year program, members learn to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, and respect the cultural identities of themselves and others – all the while allowing members to practice and improve their public speaking skills.
